Accounting & Finance · Melbourne, VIC, Australia · Contract · $90,000 - $120,000/yr · Visa: Employer sponsored · Applicants: Onshore applicants only
Melbourne-based and hybrid, this Financial Accountant job sits in a fast-growing online marketplace business within Australia's tech scene. The contract starts as temporary and is set up to convert to permanent full-time work, so you get immediate cover and a clear route forward.
You will answer to the Financial Controller, with day-to-day contact with the CFO, and work beside an assistant accountant who processes the daily transactions. Think month-end discipline, trustworthy balance sheets and statutory compliance across several entities. The brief is sound foundations and tidy reporting rather than elaborate commercial modelling, in a small team with open access to senior leaders. The role is open to applicants already in Australia with work rights.

Key Responsibilities
- Own the month-end and period-end close in Xero for several group operating entities: journals, balance sheet reconciliations and consolidated trial balances
- Handle statutory and regulatory tax compliance for every group entity, including BAS/GST lodgements, payroll tax reconciliations, leave provisions and FBT returns, working with external tax advisors
- Review the daily processing done by an offshore Assistant Accountant: invoice entry, accounts receivable follow-ups and routine payroll runs
- Keep intercompany loan accounts, recharges and eliminations in order across the subsidiaries so balance sheets stay audit-ready
- Back basic FP&A by updating the short-term cash flow tracker, working out actual-versus-budget expense variances and pulling data together for annual budget roll-forwards
- Apply the group's enterprise AI tools and automation platforms to repetitive ledger reconciliations, and help executives with ad-hoc schedules and paperwork for group structuring and new entity setups
Requirements & Eligibility
- A tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance or Commerce
- CA/CPA status, or an equivalent international qualification (ACA, ACCA or CIMA, for example), completed or underway
- Proven background in financial accounting, owning month-end ledgers and statutory compliance, within Australia or a comparable jurisdiction
- Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417 or 462) holders who have full Australian work rights are strongly encouraged to apply, and employer sponsorship is supported for high-performing talent moving to permanent status
- Personal accountability, close attention to detail and adaptability to keep order in a dynamic scale-up setting
- Clear, concise written and verbal communication, with confidence working directly with executive stakeholders
