Working in New Zealand and Australia: your questions
Quick answers first; the visa guides have the detail and the official links.
Can I apply from outside New Zealand?
Yes. Most roles here are open to overseas applicants. Each advert says if a job needs existing New Zealand or Australian work rights.
What is an accredited employer?
A New Zealand business that INZ has approved to hire migrants on the Accredited Employer Work Visa. It must also pass a job check for each role.
How much experience do I need for an AEWV?
Two years or more of relevant experience, or a relevant qualification at NZQCF level 4 or higher, in the same field as the job.
Do I need an English test?
For AEWV roles at skill level 3 to 5, yes, with results no more than two years old. Registration boards and Australian visas have their own rules.
Will my qualification be recognised?
Not automatically. Many overseas qualifications need an NZQA International Qualification Assessment, and regulated jobs need New Zealand registration.
What is the Green List?
A list of roles New Zealand needs. Tier 1 roles can lead straight to residence; Tier 2 roles can lead to residence after 24 months of work in the role in New Zealand.
Can I bring my family?
Partners and children apply for their own visas, and what they can get depends on your job and pay. Check before you plan around a second income.
What about my parents?
Parents of New Zealand citizens and residents can look at the Parent Boost Visa, a long-stay visitor visa, and the parent residence options on the INZ website.
Why are there Australian jobs on a New Zealand site?
Many people weigh both countries. Australia’s Skills in Demand visa works in a similar employer-led way, and some trades are paid more there.
Is applying free?
Yes. You only pay official costs such as visa fees, tests, medicals and translations. Nobody should ask you to pay for a job offer.
How do I apply?
Open the job, choose Apply by email and send the reference, your English CV and references. You can ask a quick question on WhatsApp first.
How long does it take?
Recruitment, accreditation and job checks, document gathering and visa processing all take time. Do not resign or book flights before the visa is granted.
