Civil Engineering Technician

Visa sponsorship

Engineering · Perth, WA, Australia · Full-Time · $80,000 - $90,000/yr · Visa: Employer sponsored

A civil construction and earthmoving business in Western Australia, in growth mode, works on residential, commercial and industrial developments and needs a Civil Engineering Technician to support its Civil Engineer on several earthworks and site-development projects. The position is permanent and full time, Monday to Friday, in 8-hour shifts.

Time is divided between office and field. At your desk you draft and document in AutoCAD and Civil 3D; out on site you take measurements, test materials, inspect and check quality against approved designs, Australian Standards, project specifications and WHS requirements. Suitably qualified applicants who meet the relevant immigration requirements may be sponsored under the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa programme.

Technician CVs should show both software and site skills. List AutoCAD, Civil 3D and your testing or inspection work, along with your White Card, and prepare it with Build AI CV for civil technicians. Show which parts of the work you handled personally, linking your relevant skills to the practical responsibilities described here. A clear account helps the reader understand the experience behind your application.

Key Responsibilities

  • Back the Civil Engineer by drafting, interpreting and amending plans and details in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, covering earthworks, site preparation, excavation, trenching and drainage
  • Maintain as-built drawings, drawing registers and supporting technical documents
  • Go out on site to record levels, excavation dimensions, earthworks profiles and drainage gradients, then compare readings and survey data with approved drawings and specifications and prepare any differences for the engineer to review
  • Assist with soil and material testing in the field and lab, coordinating the work and analysing outcomes
  • Inspect earthworks, trenching, excavation and drainage, log non-conformances, and watch soil placement, fill, backfill and compaction against engineering requirements
  • Work out and verify cut-and-fill, earthworks and material quantities, produce quantity schedules, tabulations and tender paperwork, and help estimate labour and material quantities and costs
  • Assemble field data and test results into technical reports, checklists and compliance records, keeping tidy technical records for verification, quality control and handover
  • Review subcontractor drawings, method statements and submissions against approved drawings and specifications
  • Brief supervisors, machinery operators, subcontractors and surveyors on technical site matters, and raise any site conditions or technical problems that may affect quality or compliance

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering, Civil Construction, Building Engineering Technology or a related discipline (other qualifications with substantial relevant experience may be considered)
  • At least 2 years in civil engineering technical support, earthworks, site preparation, drainage or civil construction
  • Practical knowledge of the relevant Australian Standards, including AS 3798 and the relevant parts of the AS 1289 series
  • Competent in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, able to read drawings and specifications, take site measurements and assist with quantity calculations
  • Grasp of technical inspections, construction quality control and non-conformance reporting
  • Microsoft Office proficiency, particularly Excel and Word (MS Project is desirable), along with strong communication and coordination
  • White Card (current), or the ability to obtain it before site work
  • Valid Australian driver licence, or the ability to obtain one, and readiness to travel between project sites across Western Australia
