Carpet & Flooring Installer

Visa sponsorship

Trade · Christchurch, New Zealand · Full-Time · $25 - $38/hr · Visa: Employer sponsored

A flooring company in Christchurch is growing and needs seasoned carpet and flooring installers, senior installers able to lead jobs, and motivated newcomers who want to learn the trade. Junior installers, current apprentices and people aiming to start an apprenticeship are encouraged to apply; more than one strong candidate may be appointed.

These are permanent, full-time positions, with a minimum of 37.5 hours per week and a typical week of 40–42 hours per week, mainly Monday to Friday with the odd extra hour when needed. Seniors take a job from arrival to completion and organise and support another installer or a small crew; trainees work alongside the experienced team, with supervision matched to their ability. People on the AEWV are welcome, even if they need an employer to sponsor their Accredited Employer Work Visa application, though any offer depends on getting the right New Zealand work rights.

Installers are hired for reliability, so show it: floors you have laid, materials you know and how you work with others. Tidy up your flooring CV so it is easy to read.

  • Measure up, set out, cut and fit flooring with accuracy.
  • Lay carpet, underlay, trims and accessories.
  • Fit sheet vinyl and vinyl plank flooring where you are competent and trained.
  • Prepare surfaces by smoothing, grinding and levelling where required, and strip out and dispose of old flooring.
  • Flag any access, preparation, scheduling or site-condition problems you notice.
  • Maintain quality standards, leaving each finished job neat and clean.
  • Be professional with customers, builders, site managers and suppliers.
  • Keep timesheets and job details correct.

  • Good communicator with a professional manner around customers.
  • Productive in a team, ready to follow instructions, learn and improve.
  • Able to handle flooring materials safely and cope with the physical side of the job.
  • A full driver licence for senior installers. For junior and trainee applicants, a licence is preferred and reliable transport to the agreed meeting point is essential.
  • Senior positions need strong carpet installation skills, the ability to run jobs independently and the confidence to organise and support another installer or a small crew.
  • Experience installing sheet vinyl and vinyl plank flooring is highly valued.
  • Trainees do not need previous flooring experience. Reliability, willingness to learn, practical interest and a good attitude to work are essential.
