AEWV maximum stay: could a new job leave you counting the wrong dates?

Visa guide · 2026-11-01 · 8 min read

Two adults compare plain folders at a home desk.

The AEWV maximum stay is not always the expiry date on your current visa, and neither is necessarily the end date of your job. Track those dates separately before accepting a new role or making a longer-term plan. A proposed job change should prompt a fresh check of the conditions that apply to you.

The Accredited Employer Work Visa is a New Zealand employer-led route. This guide considers the position as at 1 November 2026 for an international reader, whether applying from overseas or already holding permission. It does not assume that every holder has the longest stay mentioned in general guidance.

AEWV maximum stay: identify the continuous period first

The general maximum continuous stay is 5 years for work at ANZSCO or National Occupation List skill level 1, 2 or 3. For skill level 4 or 5 work, it is 3 years. After reaching the maximum, a person normally needs 12 consecutive months outside New Zealand before another AEWV.

The official AEWV information explains that the job and circumstances matter. Read the actual grant as well as the general description. Do not infer your remaining time from the date another worker received permission.

For planning, distinguish the current visa period from time counted towards the continuous-stay maximum. If something is unclear, identify the particular dates and previous grants before asking a question. A statement that you have years left may conceal different assumptions about which clock is being discussed.

What changed for level 4 and 5 work in March 2025

From 10 March 2025, new ANZSCO level 4 and 5 AEWVs could be granted for 3 years rather than 2. That brought their possible visa length into line with the general maximum continuous stay. Keep the change date attached when comparing an older grant with a newer description.

An older visa does not rewrite itself because a later policy description uses a different period. Read the document you actually hold and the process relevant to any further permission. The date you heard about a reform is not evidence that an individual application has been completed.

Our practical AEWV guide places duration alongside the offer and applicant requirements. A longer possible stay does not remove the need to understand the real job, pay and conditions.

Linked wage settings need their proper purpose

From 9 March 2026, the immigration median wage is NZD $35.00 an hour, based on June 2025 data. The general median-wage requirement for the AEWV was removed in March 2025, but some settings remain linked to that measure. Do not turn the removal into a statement that pay never matters.

Those linked settings include a 5-year maximum stay for some lower-skilled roles paid at least 1.5 times the median wage. Read the applicable conditions for the role instead of assuming its skill level alone supplies every answer. This article does not calculate an individual's maximum period from a single rate.

The immigration measure is also not a forecast of what every worker earns. Use the actual offer when considering pay and ask what each quoted amount represents. A threshold, an employer's rate and a household budget are different records.

A new job raises permission questions before the first shift

Start with what is changing: employer, duties, location or more than one part of the arrangement. Compare the proposal with the conditions of your current permission. Ask what application or change process is relevant before relying on an informal statement that moving jobs is straightforward.

Give the prospective employer an accurate account of your present position. A recruitment decision can move faster than an immigration process. Do not turn the employer's preferred start date into an assumed permission date, or leave a relevant restriction out of the discussion because it feels inconvenient.

Our article on testing an employer's recruitment timetable suggests useful questions. The article covers broader employment context; your own permission must still be checked through the New Zealand framework.

A CV recording role changes and employment dates clearly helps explain the work history. Keep the underlying records consistent rather than smoothing over a break or changing a title to make the chronology look simpler.

The English exception is specific to the process

The skill level 3 AEWV English rule introduced from 1 June 2026 does not apply to Job Change applications. The official explanation also lists other defined exemptions and transitional arrangements. That exception concerns the stated English requirement, not unrestricted permission to take any job.

Read the English transition guidance with the actual application in mind. People whose AEWV expires on or before 1 December 2026 have a defined further skill level 3 AEWV exemption, and previous English evidence can also be relevant.

Do not expand one exception into an answer about every other condition. If the work or application differs, identify which part of the published rule you are relying on. Clear scope is more useful than saying you are exempt without naming the requirement.

The announced 2027 extension is not available time yet

INZ has announced that an AEWV extension of up to 12 months to complete skilled work experience for the Skilled Migrant Category is scheduled for introduction in 2027. As at this article's date, it is announced rather than in force. A future extension should not be added to the expiry shown on an existing visa.

The SMC changes announcement provides the policy context. Keep residence research separate from the permissions currently held. An intended future measure does not itself decide an individual application or employment arrangement.

Our discussion of work continuity and a regional residence plan helps frame those practical questions. Use actual vacancies to compare duties rather than treating a pathway as an offer of employment.

Keep a dated record you can explain

  1. Collect the actual visa grants and employment periods.
  2. Separate current expiry, continuous-stay settings and the contract term.
  3. Identify precisely what the proposed job change involves.
  4. Check the relevant process and any narrowly defined exemption.
  5. Keep future announcements outside the time already confirmed.

Save confirmations and decisions, not only draft forms. Our article on proving an online submission explains that record-keeping distinction. It helps you discuss a particular application event without guessing from a screen remembered later.

Common mistakes when a new offer changes the timetable

Do not assume a new employer resets every stay calculation, the longest possible visa is your current grant, or a future extension can be used immediately. An English exception does not settle every permission question. Read the actual dates and conditions before treating the next work plan as confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AEWV maximum stay always my current visa period?

No. The continuous-stay maximum and the expiry on an individual grant are different records. Read the actual visa and the settings relevant to your employment history.

Does accepting a new job settle my work permission?

An offer is recruitment progress, not a decision on immigration conditions. Check the proposed change against your current permission and the relevant application process.

Does the skill level 3 English rule apply to a Job Change?

The stated English extension does not apply to Job Change applications. That exception is limited to the requirement described and does not remove every other condition.

Can the announced 2027 extension be counted now?

No. As at this article date it is a scheduled future measure. Do not add prospective time to the expiry or permission shown on an existing grant.

What documents help explain the timing question?

Keep actual grants, employment periods, the proposed offer and submission confirmations identifiable. Distinguish a draft or enquiry from an issued decision when asking about your situation.
