Considering training in Australia too? Are the approvals ready before lodgement?

Visa guide · 2026-08-14 · 3 min read

Two colleagues discuss a wall of blank planning notes in a bright office.

Training in Australia should not be planned using the sequencing of a New Zealand application. The Australian subclass 407 account discussed here describes approval requirements applying from 11 March 2026. A sponsor's application being in progress is different from approval being in place when the worker lodges.

Identify what has actually been approved

The source says a valid Training visa application requires an approved temporary activities sponsor and an approved nomination for the specific applicant before lodgement.

Commonwealth agencies are exempt from the nomination requirement described, but still need sponsor approval. That exception should not be extended to all sponsors or treated as a reason an applicant can skip the relevant check.

A premature application is more than a queue delay

The account contrasts the earlier approach of lodging sponsorship, nomination and visa applications around the same time with the required sequence. Under the described change, lodging without the necessary prior approvals means the visa application is invalid.

The charge is refunded in the source's account, but that does not preserve the application or its place in processing. Do not treat a payment receipt as proof that the required validity conditions were met.

Current permission needs its own timetable

The source warns that an invalid application cannot be relied on for the bridging outcome an applicant expected from a valid application. Someone already in Australia needs to compare their existing expiry with the approvals still required.

Do not assume another visa is available or that a training start date extends current permission. If a gap is possible, an individual assessment is needed before the existing stay expires.

  1. Check the sponsor's approval status.
  2. Confirm the applicant-specific nomination or applicable exception.
  3. Compare those records with the intended lodgement.
  4. Review existing visa conditions and expiry independently.

For career research, compare job requirements against your actual background. A CV explaining the skills relevant to training supports an employment conversation without establishing a valid visa application.

If New Zealand remains the primary destination, assess its route separately. Similar words such as sponsor or training do not imply the countries use identical categories or bridging arrangements.

Common mistakes with approval sequencing

Avoid treating pending approvals as granted, assuming a refund preserves status or relying on a training plan to extend permission. Keep sponsorship, nomination and the visa application as distinct records.

Questions before an Australian Training visa lodgement

Is a pending sponsor application enough?

No. The account requires approval in place.

Does every sponsor have the nomination exemption?

No. The source names Commonwealth agencies.

Does an invalid application keep its queue position?

No. The account describes needing to start again.

Can the sequencing be assumed for New Zealand?

No. Check that destination's actual route.

Make the approval sequence visible

Confirm the records before lodgement and protect the existing-status timetable. A clear sequence is central to a valid application.
