Skilled Migrant Category evidence: which route can your records support?
Visa guide · 2026-10-13 · 7 min read

Skilled Migrant Category evidence needs to support a complete residence pathway. Start by identifying what your qualifications, registration, income and work history actually establish, then compare that record with the route's requirements. Different pathways recognise different kinds of experience; their conditions should not be blended.
New Zealand added Skilled Work Experience and Trades and Technician pathways from 24 August 2026. That creates more than a points calculation to consider, but it does not turn every experienced worker into an eligible applicant. A suitable job and the remaining residence conditions still matter.
Sort Skilled Migrant Category evidence by the claim it supports
The Skilled Migrant Category, or SMC, needs a skilled job or job offer from an accredited employer for at least 30 hours a week. Its verified requirements include an age of 55 or younger and English. The application charge starts at NZD $6450, and the Resident Visa permits living, working and studying in New Zealand indefinitely.
Keep those common requirements visible while examining the pathways. A qualification can support a particular claim without establishing the employer's position. A job offer can support employment evidence without showing the applicant has completed the required experience.
The official SMC pathway descriptions provide the starting point. Organise your records so each requirement can be checked without relying on an optimistic summary of the whole career.
Points depend on the recognised basis of the claim
The Points-based pathway requires 6 skilled resident points from a qualification, income or New Zealand occupational registration, with qualifying New Zealand skilled work experience able to add points. The verified work scale is 1 year for 1 point, 1.5 years for 2 points and 2 years for 3 points.
For income, the verified scale gives 6 points at 3 times the SMC wage threshold, currently NZD $105.00 an hour, 4 points at twice the threshold and 3 points at 1.5 times. Do not substitute an expected future salary for evidence of the actual pay relevant to the claim.
Qualification treatment also differs. Overseas qualifications score 6 points for a doctorate, 5 for a master's and 4 for the listed bachelor's or postgraduate awards. For New Zealand qualifications, the verified scale includes 6 for a qualifying master's with at least 30 weeks of full-time local study and 5 for a bachelor's.
Read the award and study conditions rather than relying on its name alone. Our article on master's study and the separate job requirement explains why an academic points result should remain connected to a realistic employment plan.
Experience routes need dates that can be followed
The Skilled Work Experience pathway needs a current occupation at ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3, paid at least 1.1 times the SMC wage threshold. ANZSCO is the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations. The verified experience description requires 3 years of relevant experience plus 2 more years of skilled New Zealand experience at the required pay level.
Red List occupations and level 4 to 5 roles are not eligible for that pathway. Amber list occupations have an additional condition: at least 5 years of New Zealand experience, including 2 years paid at least 1.2 times the SMC median wage. Do not assume the general description covers every occupation identically.
The Trades and Technician pathway instead needs an eligible role paid at least the SMC wage threshold, a relevant level 4 or higher qualification and post-qualification experience. Its verified description includes 2.5 years of post-qualification experience plus 1.5 years of post-qualification skilled New Zealand work.
Overseas qualifications for that pathway need an International Qualification Assessment from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, commonly called an NZQA IQA. Keep the qualification completion date visible when organising work periods; earlier work is not automatically post-qualification work.
| Pathway | Core evidence to organise | Planning risk |
|---|---|---|
| Points-based | Recognised points basis and any qualifying local work | Assuming an award title settles its treatment |
| Skilled Work Experience | Occupation, relevant history and local skilled pay records | Overlooking role-specific exclusions or conditions |
| Trades and Technician | Eligible trade, qualification assessment and later work history | Counting work before qualification as post-qualification experience |
Track the wage threshold and work period together
From 24 August 2026, migrants who start skilled work experience within 5 months of a work visa grant can use the wage threshold in force on the grant date. This makes the grant date, work start and applicable wage evidence connected facts to check.
Do not assume that a general statement about a wage lock covers every employment change or missing record. Preserve the documents showing what happened and ask how the actual rule applies. An approximate memory of when a job started is a weak basis for a dated assessment.
The final details of the August 2026 changes also distinguish self-employment. It cannot count as directly relevant experience for the Skilled Work Experience or Trades and Technician pathways.

Keep the expression of interest distinct from the application
The SMC Expression of Interest is free. Applicants meeting a pathway's requirements are told immediately and receive an Invitation to Apply by email, with 4 months to submit the application. That invitation starts another stage rather than replacing the evidence needed for the claim.
Check that the information entered matches the records you can provide. If a point or work period depends on an assumption, clarify it before treating the figure as established. A tidy calculation is only useful when its inputs are accurate.
Our article on early residence application figures separates uptake from grants. Another applicant's interest or submission does not establish your own position.
Maintain a career record alongside the formal file
For recruitment, compare actual job requirements with your background. Our manufacturing roles can help identify the duties employers request where that sector matches your skills.
A CV with a clear work chronology helps communicate experience. Keep the supporting material separately organised so a recruitment summary does not become the only account of dates, duties or qualification completion.
SMC applicants may include a partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger. They may apply for a Permanent Resident Visa after holding the SMC Resident Visa for 2 years in a row. Family evidence and the later permanent-residence assessment remain identifiable decisions, rather than automatic consequences of starting a job.
Audit the file before relying on a pathway
- Confirm the common job and applicant requirements.
- Identify the complete pathway your genuine records may support.
- Separate qualifications, assessments, work dates and pay evidence.
- Check occupation-specific exclusions and conditions.
- Review the information before submitting an expression of interest.
Common mistakes when several pathways look possible
Avoid mixing requirements, counting self-employment where it is excluded or treating an invitation as a completed residence decision. Keep post-qualification work distinct and record the dates needed for any wage-threshold condition.
Frequently asked questions
Does a qualifying job offer by itself establish SMC eligibility?
The applicant also needs to meet a specific Skilled Migrant Category pathway and the other residence conditions. Keep the job and pathway evidence separately identifiable.
Can I mix the easiest conditions from different SMC pathways?
Each pathway has its own requirements. Assess a complete pathway against genuine records rather than assembling a different test from parts of several routes.
Do early application totals show my chance of approval?
Application volumes measure interest and submissions, rather than individual eligibility. The evidence and conditions relevant to your own file still determine the assessment.
Can overseas qualifications be assumed equivalent to New Zealand awards?
Record the actual qualification and check any required assessment. A familiar award title does not settle the New Zealand level or the evidence needed by the chosen pathway.
Does self-employment count in the experience pathways?
Self-employment cannot count as directly relevant experience for the Skilled Work Experience or Trades and Technician pathways under the verified conditions discussed here.
Key takeaways
- Assess a complete pathway rather than a collection of favourable conditions.
- Keep qualification and employment dates clear.
- Connect wages to the relevant work periods.
- Distinguish invitation, application and decision.
- Use evidence that supports your actual claim.
