Considering an Australian state nomination too? Check the programme stage first
Visa guide · 2026-08-19 · 3 min read

An Australian state nomination plan needs more detail than choosing a preferred city. If New Zealand is your first option and Australia another, keep state programmes separate from New Zealand routes. The 2026-27 account discussed here includes confirmed allocations, pending programmes and employer agreement matters at different stages.
Check whether the programme was open and what was allocated
The source gives Tasmania 2,050 nomination places: 1,250 for subclass 190 and 800 for subclass 491. Registrations reopened on 17 August 2026, with invitations beginning on 20 August.
It describes Tasmania stopping offshore subclass 491 invitations for the programme year, with a narrow subclass 190 job-offer pathway for eligible health professionals and teachers. Do not transfer that exception to all overseas occupations or assume an earlier registration converts automatically.
| Jurisdiction in the account | Programme position described |
|---|---|
| Tasmania | Confirmed allocation and reopened registration |
| ACT | New portal but allocation still pending |
| Queensland | Programme awaiting its final allocation |
A better portal does not create an invitation
The ACT portal introduced on 30 July 2026 brought tracking and submission changes. The account gives $350 in combined Matrix and nomination charges, with Matrix validity and updates subject to their own conditions.
It also describes expedited handling for certain urgent circumstances after invitation. That is not faster selection for an invitation. Administrative convenience and substantive eligibility remain different questions.
Read related coverage of Australian programme proposals and separate New Zealand residence evidence.
Employer agreement matters are another process
The source discusses a 50% reduction in certain Far North Queensland subclass 186 endorsement charges when bundled with the corresponding subclass 482 position. That is an employer endorsement arrangement, not a universal discount for every applicant.
It also discusses requesting age or English concessions at initial endorsement and a proposed removal of specified aged-care occupations being on hold. A concession requires the applicable agreement conditions; an on-hold variation is not proof of permanent availability.
- Identify the visa and state programme relevant to you.
- Check allocation, opening and invitation status.
- Keep nomination distinct from the visa decision.
- Assess any employer agreement concession separately.
Compare actual job requirements with your background. A CV explaining occupation-relevant experience supports recruitment without supplying a nomination.
Common mistakes when comparing state programmes
Avoid treating an allocation as an invitation, a portal update as eligibility or an employer charge concession as a general applicant benefit. Archive settings need checking before a later commitment.
Questions about the state nomination account
Does an allocation give me a place?
No. Selection and applicant conditions still apply.
Does expedited post-invitation handling speed selection?
Not as described in the source.
Are employer agreement concessions universal?
No. The relevant agreement conditions matter.
Can these programmes be used as New Zealand rules?
No. They concern Australia.
Compare the actual programme and stage
Check whether the relevant process is open and suitable. A clear state plan rests on eligibility and current programme detail, not location preference alone.
