Comparing New Zealand with Australia? Build the Australian visa budget by applicant

News · 2026-08-06 · 3 min read

Two applicants check paperwork and a calculator at a shared office table.

A New Zealand-first plan with Australia as another option needs a separate visa budget for each destination. The Australian fee account discussed here describes charges applying from 1 July 2026. It is a dated record, so confirm the amount for your actual category and family before paying.

Start with the application rather than an average cost

The source gives a Skills in Demand subclass 482 charge of $4,015, increased from $3,210. It gives $6,140 for Employer Nomination Scheme subclass 186 and regional employer-sponsored subclass 494.

For points-tested routes, the account lists $6,135 for subclass 189 and $6,140 for subclasses 190 and 491. These are different categories with different eligibility tests; the price alone cannot identify a suitable route.

Family composition changes the total

The account says additional family members bring separate charges. Its example of a main applicant, spouse and child using subclass 189 totals $10,745 in government charges.

That example should not be applied to every household or route. Identify who will apply, their actual categories and which charges are payable. A principal applicant's figure is not automatically the complete family budget.

Include the costs outside the application charge

The source also lists English testing, skills assessments, medical examinations and police certificates as potential costs. Whether an item is required depends on the actual application.

It gives $2,500 for Student subclass 500 and subclass 590, $5,750 for Temporary Graduate subclass 485 and $11,710 for a partner visa. These dated figures do not replace confirmation of the charge relevant to later circumstances.

The account distinguishes applications lodged before 1 July 2026 from those lodged from that date. A pending decision does not by itself determine which schedule applied; the described change depended on lodgement.

  1. Identify the correct route and each applicant.
  2. Confirm the charge before payment.
  3. Check required supporting assessments and documents.
  4. Clarify employer and applicant responsibilities separately.

Compare actual job requirements rather than assuming demand settles the budget or visa. A CV showing relevant skills supports recruitment while the application costs need their own plan.

Common mistakes in a destination visa budget

Avoid treating a principal charge as the family total, using Australian figures for New Zealand or choosing a route on price without eligibility. Historical charges also need a date attached.

Questions about the Australian charge account

Is the principal charge the whole family bill?

Not necessarily. Additional applicants can bring charges.

Does a cheaper category mean I qualify?

No. Eligibility needs separate assessment.

Are supporting checks always included?

No. The source identifies other potential costs.

Should the amount be confirmed before payment?

Yes. Use the actual category and circumstances.

Budget for the application you would really make

Keep category, family and date clear. A complete cost comparison is more useful than a single visa fee.
