AEWV job offer checks: could accreditation hide an unfinished application?

AEWV job offer checks start with a qualifying offer. The Accredited Employer Work Visa needs a qualifying offer before the applicant can use this New Zealand work route. Employer accreditation, an approved job check and your own skills are separate parts of the assessment. Check how they fit the actual position before making travel or employment commitments.

The route is relevant to international applicants of different nationalities; it is not limited to people living in a particular country. Its purpose is employment with the accredited employer offering the job. A general wish to work in New Zealand is not the same as an offer that meets the requirements.

AEWV job offer checks begin with the actual position

The offer must be current when you apply, from an accredited employer with an approved job check for that job. It needs to provide full-time work of at least 30 hours a week, paid at least the market rate. Check the duties and location as carefully as the name of the business.

The employer sends the applicant a link to the online application form. Keep that step identifiable in your records, alongside the employment offer and any requests for evidence. An informal recruitment conversation should not be described as a completed application.

The official AEWV page explains the route's conditions. Read it with the actual offer rather than assuming every role at an accredited business has identical terms or a job check already approved.

Use our job listings to compare duties and stated requirements. Before relying on a role, ask the employer which steps have been completed and what remains outstanding. Keep an accurate account of that answer.

Show relevant experience or the applicable qualification

The skills requirement includes at least 2 years of relevant work experience, measured as full-time equivalent, or a qualification at level 4 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework in the same field as the job. A bachelor's degree or higher can be in any field.

Relevant is the important word when preparing work history. Explain the tasks you performed, the setting in which you used the skills and your actual level of responsibility. A senior title without duties does not establish that the experience matches the offered role.

From 10 March 2025, the work-experience requirement was reduced from 3 years to 2 years. The same change removed the general median-wage requirement for the AEWV, with the minimum wage and market rate applying. The dated AEWV change notice helps distinguish that rule from later occupation-list changes.

Keep qualifications, completed study and employment evidence organised separately. Do not claim a local registration or assessment outcome just because an overseas certificate has a familiar title. Our article about trade recognition alongside a job search explains why practical competence and permission to perform regulated work need their own attention.

Check English through the job's skill level

From 1 June 2026, AEWV minimum English requirements apply to skill level 3 roles as well as levels 4 and 5 under the relevant occupation classification. Skill level 1 and 2 jobs have no AEWV English requirement. Establish the classification of the actual work rather than inferring it from a job title alone.

A temporary work requirement should not be confused with the English conditions of a later residence application or a professional registration process. If your longer plan depends on another assessment, check that assessment separately. Evidence accepted for one purpose does not automatically meet every other test.

Where English evidence is needed, organise it in time for the application you intend to make. Confirm the accepted evidence on the official route page and check that the personal details match your other documents. An employer's confidence in your communication is not a substitute for a formal requirement.

Read the permitted stay as a condition, not a promise

The maximum continuous stay is 5 years for skill level 1, 2 or 3 jobs and 3 years for skill level 4 or 5 jobs. After reaching the maximum, a person normally needs to spend 12 months in a row outside New Zealand before another AEWV. The actual visa period still depends on the relevant conditions.

Keep the expiry and work conditions shown on your own grant accessible. Do not build a household or career timetable solely around the longest period mentioned in a general guide. A maximum describes a limit, rather than a period automatically available to every applicant.

Ask how the employment plan would respond if timing changes. Our discussion of employer start dates and recognition steps offers questions that can make recruitment expectations clearer without supplying an individual decision date.

Keep family and health evidence in their own parts of the plan

A partner and dependent children cannot be included in an AEWV application. The holder may be able to support their separate visas depending on earnings and job skill level. Do not assume that permission for the worker settles the family's work, study or visiting arrangements.

For health and character preparation, the verified conditions include police certificates less than 6 months old for applicants aged 17 or older staying 24 months or longer. A chest X-ray may be needed for stays over 6 months, depending on the applicable circumstances. Check the actual requests and requirements rather than copying another applicant's document list.

Keep submission confirmations, further-information requests and decision letters together. Our article about retaining online application evidence shows why a saved draft and a successfully submitted file should remain distinct records.

Check whether the proposed work belongs in this route

The AEWV cannot cover planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops in horticulture or viticulture, foreign crew of fishing vessels, or self-employed work. A workforce need in one of those settings does not remove that exclusion. Other categories require their own eligibility assessment.

For work that does fit the route, prepare the recruitment evidence honestly. A CV showing relevant work experience can help explain your background. Compare roles within our manufacturing category where the sector matches your skills.

Move through the checks in a clear sequence

  1. Identify the actual duties, location and qualifying employment offer.
  2. Confirm the employer and job-check steps relevant to that position.
  3. Organise skills, qualification and English evidence.
  4. Review health, character, family and permitted-stay questions separately.
  5. Keep copies of the application and wait for confirmed permission before relying on a start.

Common mistakes with an employer-led application

Avoid treating accreditation as approval, a title as evidence of competence or the maximum stay as your own grant period. Do not confuse the March 2025 experience change with later reforms. Keep the actual offer and the applicant's conditions visible throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the AEWV to travel to New Zealand and find a job?

The route requires a current qualifying job offer from an accredited employer with an approved job check. It is not permission to arrive first and look for any job.

Does employer accreditation mean that my visa will be granted?

Accreditation concerns the employer's position. The job check, offer and applicant requirements remain separate, so accreditation alone does not complete the assessment.

Is the experience requirement still 3 years?

The requirement was reduced to 2 years from 10 March 2025. Relevant experience or the applicable qualification must still be demonstrated for the job.

Can my partner and children be included in my AEWV application?

They cannot be included in that application. The holder may be able to support separate family visas depending on earnings and job skill level.

Does a visa lasting up to 5 years mean every applicant gets that period?

No. The permitted stay depends on the job and the applicable conditions. Check the actual grant rather than using the longest possible period as your own expiry date.

Key takeaways

  • Begin with a qualifying current offer and the correct job check.
  • Demonstrate relevant skills accurately.
