AEWV English requirement: does your evidence fit the job?

The AEWV English requirement is easiest to understand when you begin with the job, rather than a test booking. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) connects the applicant to specified employment in New Zealand. English evidence depends on the job's skill level and the evidence options or exceptions that apply to the person.

Since 1 June 2026, skill level 3 jobs have joined levels 4 and 5 within the minimum English requirement. That does not mean every overseas worker must sit the same examination, or that a work-visa result will satisfy a future residence application. Build the evidence around the actual application you intend to make.

Locate the AEWV English requirement in your job assessment

Start by identifying the occupation classification used for the offered work. The relevant skill level can be under the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) or the National Occupation List (NOL), as applicable. A familiar job title is not enough to settle that classification.

From 1 June 2026, the AEWV minimum English requirement covers skill levels 3, 4 and 5. Skill level 1 and 2 jobs have no AEWV English requirement. Read the dated extension to skill level 3 roles before relying on advice written for an earlier application.

Our account of why duties matter more than an impressive title considers an Australian example, but the research habit is useful here: obtain the actual responsibilities before assuming a classification. Australia's visa evidence must still be checked under its own rules.

Put the accepted result and the test conditions together

If a test is the evidence route you need, record its full name, overall result, date and format. Immigration New Zealand lists IELTS General or Academic overall 4, TOEFL iBT overall 31, PTE Academic overall 29 and B2 First, including B2 First for Schools, overall 142 for the AEWV.

The result must be under two years old and the test must have been taken in person at a test centre. A score screenshot without the surrounding test details leaves important questions unanswered. Keep the official result in a form that can be matched to your application.

TOEFL iBT31In person; result under two years old
PTE Academic29In person; result under two years old
B2 First or B2 First for Schools142In person; result under two years old

Use the official AEWV English evidence page for the accepted routes. An employer's workplace communication assessment and immigration's evidence requirement answer different questions. Passing an interview should not be substituted for the visa evidence.

Check the no-test evidence without broadening its scope

One option combines citizenship with a work or study history. It applies to citizens of Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States who have spent at least five years working or studying in one of those countries, Australia or New Zealand. The citizenship condition and the history condition belong together.

Another option concerns a bachelor's or postgraduate qualification from those six countries. For a bachelor's qualification, the evidence includes at least two years living there while studying; for a postgraduate qualification, at least one year. Do not turn the country list into a general exemption for every qualification taught in English.

These options are specific evidence routes, rather than a judgement about a nationality's English ability. Applicants of any nationality should examine the route that fits their own documents. Someone else's passport, education or work history cannot supply a missing part of your file.

Make a brief record of where you lived, when you studied and what qualification was awarded. If a detail is uncertain, investigate it before describing the option as satisfied. That is more useful than collecting a large folder of documents without knowing what they need to establish.

Read the skill level 3 exceptions as separate conditions

The extension does not apply to Job Change applications, the Global Workforce Seasonal Visa or the Peak Seasonal Visa. It also excludes people who already supplied English evidence on a previous AEWV. These are named circumstances, so keep the relevant application type visible in your notes.

A further exception concerns a further skill level 3 AEWV for people whose AEWV expires on or before 1 December 2026. That expiry condition should not become a general statement that all applications made before December are exempt. An application date and a visa expiry date are different facts.

If you have a previous visa, locate the actual grant and any English evidence already supplied. Our discussion of checking the detail behind a visa-system result is a reminder to reconcile records carefully instead of relying on an assumption about what the system remembers.

Prepare English for the work as well as the application

After identifying the immigration evidence, practise the communication the role actually uses. A maintenance worker may need to explain a fault clearly. A care worker may need to describe an observation accurately. These are preparation examples, not extra immigration score requirements.

Use a real task from the advertisement and practise explaining what happened, what you did and what you checked afterwards. A partner can ask follow-up questions so you become comfortable clarifying rather than repeating a memorised speech. Avoid claiming duties you have not performed.

Targeted English speaking practice for work conversations can support that routine. Keep practice separate from the recognised test result and evidence conditions immigration needs.

Read current job descriptions for the communication tasks an employer actually mentions. The manufacturing category is one place to compare practical responsibilities without treating every role as interchangeable.

Leave a separate page for a later residence plan

The listed skilled residence scores for a principal applicant are IELTS overall 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE Academic 58 or B2 First 176. Partners and children aged 16 or older have separate listed scores: IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 35, PTE Academic 36 or B2 First 154. At-home tests are not accepted.

Those numbers should not be mixed with the lower AEWV test minimums. If residence is a future aim, identify the residence category and its evidence rules before assuming the work-visa file will serve unchanged. Our coverage of early Skilled Migrant Category applications also explains why interest in a route does not establish an individual outcome.

Organise the evidence before choosing the next action

  1. Confirm the offered duties and relevant occupation skill level.
  2. Identify whether the English requirement applies to this application.
  3. Check a named exception or no-test evidence route against your actual records.
  4. If using a test, verify its name, result, age and in-person format.
  5. Keep any residence planning in a separate evidence checklist.

Common mistakes when organising English evidence

Do not equate a confident interview with accepted immigration evidence, treat English-medium study anywhere as an exemption or confuse visa expiry with the date you intend to apply. Avoid booking the wrong test format because its name resembles an accepted examination. A small check before booking can prevent an unsuitable evidence choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does every AEWV applicant need an English test?

The requirement depends on the job skill level and applicable evidence options or exceptions. Do not book a test simply because another applicant needed one.

What IELTS score is accepted for an AEWV?

The listed AEWV minimum is an overall score of 4 in IELTS General or Academic. The result must also meet the validity and in-person test conditions.

Can I use an at-home English test result?

The accepted AEWV tests must be taken in person at a test centre. A matching overall score alone does not establish that a different test format qualifies.

Does an English-medium qualification automatically remove the test requirement?

The qualification option has country and time-living-there conditions. Check those details rather than relying only on the language used in the classroom.

Will my AEWV English score meet the skilled residence requirement?

The listed principal-applicant scores for skilled residence are higher. Plan the residence evidence separately rather than carrying an AEWV score into a later application unchanged.

Key takeaways

  • Apply the 1 June 2026 extension accurately.
  • Keep country, history and study conditions attached to no-test options.
  • Check the result's age and in-person format.
  • Plan residence English evidence separately.
